The first question in an art listing is surprisingly basic: what am I buying? A photograph of a framed painting might be selling the original, a paper print or a file to download. The image alone often doesn’t tell you.
An Etsy shop becomes easier to put together once that offer is clear. The price, photographs, description and packaging all follow from it. One well-prepared listing is a useful place to begin.

What kind of art you can sell on Etsy
Etsy’s Creativity Standards put every item into a category, and each one comes with its own rules. These are the ones that apply to artists:
| What you sell | Etsy category | What Etsy asks of you |
|---|---|---|
| Original paintings and drawings, or prints you produce yourself | Made by a seller | Show the finished piece in your own photos |
| Prints made by a print lab or print-on-demand service | Designed by a seller | Disclose the production partner and say where the item ships from |
| Digital downloads of your own artwork | Designed by a seller | The design must be yours; upload the files to the listing |
| Art generated with AI tools from your own prompts | Designed by a seller | Say in the listing description that AI was used |
A scan, PDF or bundle of someone else’s work doesn’t qualify. Keep other people’s characters, logos and photos out of your listings unless you have permission to use them.
Not sure where to start? Choose by the work each order takes: digital downloads need no shipping, prints sell again and again from one artwork, and an original sells once.
The shop setup is easier with one offer ready
Before spending much time on the banner, it helps to have one work ready to list: a finished photograph, a price, dimensions and a realistic packing plan. Those choices will shape the rest of the shop.
Opening the account involves the practical details of getting paid and identifying the seller, including bank information, identity verification and any setup fee shown by Etsy. Follow the prompts in your account, then use Etsy’s listing guide as a reference while preparing the first item.
The About section can begin simply, with who makes the work and what you make. It doesn’t need a long brand story before the first piece is ready.
What Etsy fees cost on an art sale
| Fee | Amount for a US seller | When you pay it |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 | When you publish, each time a listing renews after 4 months, and for each extra item sold from a multi-quantity listing |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | On the item price plus any shipping and gift wrap you charge, only when it sells |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25 | On the full order, including shipping and sales tax; the rate depends on where your bank is |
| Offsite Ads | 15% or 12% | Only on orders that come from Etsy’s ads on other sites |
| Set-up fee | One-time, varies | When you open the shop, if it applies |
Here’s an example (sales tax left out to keep the math simple). A print priced at $60 with $6 shipping makes a $66 order:
- Transaction fee: $66 × 6.5% = $4.29
- Payment processing: $66 × 3% + $0.25 = $2.23
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Total fees: $6.72, which leaves $59.28 to cover the print, packaging and postage
If that order came through Offsite Ads at 15%, you’d pay another $9.90. Shops that have never reached $10,000 in sales over a 365-day period can opt out of Offsite Ads. Fees change, so check Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy before you set prices. Our guide on how to price artwork shows how to build fees into a price.
Turn one fern print into a complete listing
Suppose you are listing an 8 × 10 inch fern watercolor print that you produce yourself, on matte paper and sold unframed. This is an illustrative listing; replace the materials, packaging and timing with what you actually provide.
Start with a clear title: Fern Watercolor Art Print on Matte Paper, 8x10 in, Unframed.
Let the description answer what arrives:
One paper print of my fern watercolor. The 8 × 10 inch measurement is the full sheet, including the white border shown. Printed on matte paper and sold unframed. Packed flat with a backing board in a rigid mailer.
That opening separates the print from an original, a physical item from a download, and the artwork from its display frame. Add the actual paper specification, signing details, shipping origin and the time you need to prepare an order.
Photograph that same offer. Let the first image show the complete print, the second show the paper surface, the third explain the border and dimensions, and another show the packaging. Each answers a different question. Keep actual product photographs for prints you make yourself, and check Etsy’s image policy before adding a room preview.
The listing photo guide covers image dimensions and files; the Etsy SEO article has more title and tag examples.
Pack the listing you have just described
Put that fern print into the backing and mailer named in the description. Weigh it and check the postage to a destination you intend to serve. Does the sheet move inside? Are the corners protected? Is the finished parcel manageable once the shipping label is attached?
If packaging or postage costs more than expected, return to the price before publishing. Base the dispatch time on the real process too: keeping prints in stock is different from sending a file to the printer after each order.
A place for the print in someone’s home
A small botanical print above a writing desk is easier to imagine living with than the same file floating on a blank screen. A room preview can add that context when the image format is appropriate for your listing.
Frameit AI Studio can make the setting from the artwork photo. A pale wall, a small desk and daylight are enough to suggest a direction. The room only needs to give the painting a place; it doesn’t need to be full of things competing for attention.
If the frame is styling, say “frame not included” near the image. Keep the actual product photographs and dimensions easy to find. For originals, use real product photography, and check Etsy’s image policy for the rules that apply to your item.
